In a bid to bridge the industry-academia gap, the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced an innovative industry fellowship programme for technical education professors.


AICTE Fellowship Programme: A Game Changer for Technical Education

The AICTE Fellowship Programme is a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at enhancing industry exposure for professors. Selected faculty members will have the opportunity to work in a listed company for up to a year, ensuring that their teaching incorporates real-world industry experience. This initiative is expected to make students more industry-ready upon graduation.

As part of the programme, AICTE and the employer will jointly fund an additional Rs 1 lakh per month stipend for participating professors, above their existing salary. This scheme was recently approved in AICTE’s Executive Committee meeting.


Pilot Programme to Begin in 2025-26

AICTE will soon launch a pilot programme with 300 spots for the 2025-26 academic year. The breakdown is as follows:

  • 200 faculty members will engage in a one-year continuous industry assignment.
  • 100 faculty members will have the option to undertake two six-month placements with a gap in between.

The pilot programme will assess feasibility and determine the potential for broader implementation.


Addressing the Industry-Academia Divide

According to AICTE Vice-Chairman Dr Abhay Jere, this initiative is essential in addressing a long-standing issue in technical education: students not being industry-ready upon graduation.

“There are constant complaints from both sides—industry representatives say students lack industry readiness, while colleges struggle to keep up with industry trends. If faculty members gain first-hand industry experience, they will be able to better prepare students for real-world challenges,” said Dr Jere, who is also the Chief Innovation Officer at the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Faculty members who complete this programme will not only gain practical knowledge but also build lasting professional relationships with industry experts. This exposure could pave the way for future consultancy opportunities and foster stronger industry-academic partnerships.


Who Can Apply?

The AICTE Fellowship Programme is open to faculty members from AICTE-approved institutions. The eligibility criteria include:

  • Applicants must be under 45 years of age.
  • A faculty member can apply for a maximum of two fellowships throughout their career.
  • Selection criteria will be outlined when the programme is officially announced.

Funding and Industry Collaboration

The stipend of Rs 1 lakh per month will be jointly funded by AICTE and the employer:

  • AICTE’s contribution: Rs 75,000
  • Industry partner’s contribution: Rs 25,000

To ensure credibility, only companies listed on the stock market will be eligible to participate in this programme. Furthermore, placements will be restricted to India, even if the company is a multinational entity.


Challenges and Long-Term Impact

One potential concern is faculty retention post-fellowship. Some fear that professors may leave academia for corporate jobs after gaining industry experience. However, Dr Jere believes this is unlikely:

“Most professors hold secure government jobs and are not likely to leave academia permanently. Instead, the exposure they gain will enrich their teaching and better prepare students for industry roles.”

Another challenge is obtaining college approvals for faculty members to take time off for industry placements. Institutions will need to make temporary arrangements to accommodate absent faculty members.

Despite these hurdles, AICTE is confident that the long-term benefits of this programme outweigh the challenges, leading to stronger industry-academia ties and better employment prospects for students.
